Spotlight on You

We have several storytelling workshops available and, over the next month or so, I am going to try to give people a better understanding of what goes on in these workshops, so you can decide if the class is right for you. “Spotlight on You” is really the flagship class, so it’s a good one to start with.

One of the students who took our first “Spotlight on You” suggested we call it a workshop and not a class, and I think that is the first thing I need to explain. In “Spotlight on You,” students will workshop a story. What that means is that students will be asked to work on a story, to present it, receive feedback, and work on it more. In “Spotlight on You,” students will be working with teachers on their stories and will receive lots of feedback.

That is not to negate the education portion of the workshop. Teachers start off each workshop with examples of stories that have been successful, an explanation of what made it successful, and then some rules of storytelling are taught. Some of the basics the teachers will cover include elements of structure, character development, tips for generating empathy and writing dialogue.

“Spotlight on You” integrates classroom style education with the type of workshopping we at Better Said Than Done do before all of our storytelling shows. Each student has an individual goal going in to class, which the teacher’s assess beforehand with a survey, but the overall goal of “Spotlight on You” is to have the students enter with an idea for a story and leave with a success of a story.

As one student said:
“This workshop helped me to better structure my story and showed me what to emphasize and what to leave out. It helped me to better develop my character and story so that the audience could actually visualize my experience. The instructors were funny, experienced, and had great feedback. “ – S.K.

Our next “Spotlight on You” workshop is November 10th. There are still a few slots left. Find out more and register here.
