ON June 10, 2021, join host Nick Baskerville and storytellers David Fakunle, Lyn Ford, Chetter Galloway, Arthuretta Holmes-Martin, Carol Moore, and Devan Sandiford for a night of stories about living Black in America. This is a storytelling show. The stories will make you laugh, or make you cry, or both. The stories will open your eyes to things you were unaware of, or make you feel heard. The stories will move you and the show will entertain you.

All proceeds benefit the Fairfax County NAACP.

Nick Baskerville

Emcee

Nick Baskerville tells stories in the DC, MD, and VA area for shows such as The Moth, The Story Collider, Better Said Than Done, Mistakes Were Made, and Perfect Liar’s Club. He’s hosted shows for Better Said Than Done and Armed Service
Art Performance (ASAP) both online and in-person. Nick is currently hosting the stand-up comedy
show Clean AF Comedy Show every Friday night on Facebook.

David Fakunle

Storyteller

David Fakunle, Ph.D. serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Florida and Associate Faculty at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and his interests include manifestations of racism, and use of arts and culture to strengthen health, equity, and ultimately liberation. He serves as Chair of the MD Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the first state-level body in the U.S. chronicling and bringing justice to racial terror lynchings.

Lynette Ford

Storyteller

Lyn Ford is a fourth-generation storyteller who shares the gifts and heritage of orature from her Affrilachian family. Lyn’s narrative workshops have encouraged folks from Maine to Hawaii and in Australia and Ireland. An award-winning writer, a Thurber House mentor to young authors, an Ohio teaching artist, a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher, a great-grandmother–Lyn is still creating her story.

Chetter Galloway

Sundays were special to Chetter Galloway.  That is when his father would take the family on road trips and enthrall them with stories!  Chetter became interested in storytelling while working at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and pursued a Master of Arts Degree in Storytelling from East Tennessee State University. When he is not performing, Chetter is an avid runner, cat lover, roller coaster junkie, and huge Batman fanatic! Chetter lives his life by the words of his favorite song which is Life is a highway and I want to ride it all night long!

Arthuretta Holmes-Martin

Arthuretta was told as a child that she talked too much.  Once she grew up and realized that gift of gab was an asset, she perfected her craft, and now connects with audiences young and old through stories. She has shared the power of story through historical and personal narrative, folk tales, motivational speaking, and songs for decades. A TEDx Salon Alum and Distinguished Toastmaster, her audiences range from academic institutions, nonprofits, corporations, and government organizations.  “Own Your Story!”     www.arthurettaspeaks.com

Carol Moore

Storyteller

Carol Moore is a professional storyteller and public speaking coach who lives to connect and entertain through stories. With a style of storytelling that is comedic, conversational, and authentic, she has performed with organizations such as Story District, Better Said Than Done, Tales and Ales, Speak Up Storytelling, and the TELL: Pittsburgh Storytelling Series. She has also received the title of Moth StorySLAM Champion, is a member of the National Storytelling Network, and serves as CEO and Head Public Speaking Coach of Carol Moore Presents LLC.

Devan Sandiford

Storyteller

Devan is a writer and award-winning storyteller. His stories have been featured in the Washington Post, Moth Podcast, NPR-affiliate KNKX, and other outlets. He is currently writing his debut memoir sharing how he spent 30 years searching for his voice after his uncle was shot and killed by the police. Devan lives in Brooklyn and can be found online at www.devansandiford.com.

In 2020-2021 your donations have made an impact – from police and criminal justice reform to voter registration campaigns to advocacy in our public schools to the fight for affordable housing. In addition to fueling our advocacy agenda your gifts have made the following outcomes possible:

  • 12 FCPS students of color received distance learning technology mini-grants, ensuring effective and equitable distance learning.
  • One family received enough funding to cover FOIA fees surrounding a school discrimination incident.
  • Seven graduating members of our Youth Council received college scholarships.
  • Three area nonprofits received a total of $4,000 to to purchase basic needs gift cards for community members struggling during COVID.
  • Four local schools and universities received $2,250 to support their food pantry outreach programs.
