Storyteller Jack ScheerName: Jack Scheer

Age: 46

Profession: editor

Town where you live: Silver Spring, MD

Social media: I’m on Twitter and Instagram @JZScheer.

When did you first start telling stories on stage? Last year.  Better Said Than Done’s “Screwed” night was my debut as a storyteller.  [It was also Jack’s submission to our online contest that won him his spot in our May show.]

What was the first story you told about? The Christmas I thought my family was getting a VCR, but ended up with TV trays instead.

What’s your favorite storytelling moment? Twice I’ve been able to tell a story with the subject of the tale in the audience, and both times it was wonderful because I got to fully express how great the person is and how much they mean to me in front of a crowd.

Any other hobbies or avocations you’d like to share? I’ve done community theater on and off for nearly thirty years, which is great prep for becoming a storyteller.

I’m also getting into podcasting. I’ve sat in with friends on their podcast, Old v. Gold, a few times, and I’m in the planning stages of spinning off my own show from that.

What’s your favorite fictional story? As is true of so many right now, my current obsession is Hamilton (which I got to see in April!). But my all-time favorite story is A Christmas Carol.

Our anniversary show is at Jammin’ Java in Vienna, so, we have two related questions for you:

  1. How do you take your coffee? Cream and sugar during the day, Irish on a cold night.
  2. Have you ever been to that other Vienna, in Austria? Not yet, but it’s on my list.
